It's been awhile since I've taken a look at what passes for a beginning web development book these days. I decided to examine Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to (X)HTML, StyleSheets, and Web Graphics (3rd edition) by Jennifer Niederst Robbins. All I want to know is... why weren't books like this around when I was trying to learn this stuff?
...
So, you want to learn how to design web pages and sites. Well, the title suggests you came to the right place. Did you? In my opinion, yes. The book covers the basics of HTML and XHTML, along with the CSS necessary to show it off.
This book is a nuts and bolts CSS/HTML reference book, that you'll be pulling off the shelf frequently, when editing stylesheets and web pages.

I purchased this book in an attempt to fill in some gaps in my knowledge mainly pertaining to browser compatibility issues with CSS. I often create template for web pages using CSS and XHTML based on Photoshop designs. In my experience, creating sites for Firefox has been pretty smooth but getting things to look right in IE, especially IE6 has proved to be quite a challenge at times. This book is great in that it clearly specifies what is and what is not supported in various browsers.
My book arrived to an exciting new owner. I got through as much of it as I could the first weekeend, hoping to learn more about CSS and XHTML. I was overwhelmed by the ease of read and by the wealth of knowledge gained by the awesome examples! If you need HTML/XHTML/CSS help like I did, I wouldnt sleep on this book. I bought the book because I used to work with Jeff Noble and he is a good friend, but I also bought it because I really needed help in this field and I knew he wouldnt steer me wrong.
