GIMP 2.4 Tutorial - Selections

A decent reference but it does not explain how just what. For how you will need more detailed books. I bought it at a bookstore for two dollars and it was worth it. Ten dollars was the original price and I don't think it would have been worth that much.
This is a very good quick reference guide to the GIMP, although it is slightly out-of-date already (but that's the nature of Open Source software development).
...
This guide informs designers working in a Linux/Unix or Windows environment with a powerful and complex image manipulation tool.
The GIMP, a free Open Source image editor and a design application that approximates Photoshop in terms of functionality and power, runs on most *nix platforms.

While this was not what I was hoping for, it is an excellent introduction to the GIMP. Basic concepts are covered in some detail, and more advanced topics are commented on (mostly, it seems, to give an idea of just how powerful this program really is). The author also frequently advises experimentation, which is really the only way to learn a program like this.
Especially useful (to me, anyway) was the admittedly brief coverage on how the GIMP differs from other equivalent programs, especially those from the Mac and Windows worlds.

HIGH QUALITY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... following this tutorial you will learn the concept of selections in GIMP. Whenever I said "layer mask" I really meant "selection mask".This video was created on Ubuntu [1] using recordMyDesktop [2], Cinelerra CV [3], GIMP [4], MPlayer / MEncoder [5], a lot of trial and error and fair amounts of general computer skills and Linux knowledge. I hope you enjoy it![1] http://www.ubuntu.com[2] http://recordmydesktop.iovar.o... http://cv.cinelerra.org[4] http://www.gimp.org[5] http://www.mplayerhq.huFeel free to spread this video in YouTube-embedded format as much as you like. You're probably right. The answer to the question:You can set the tile cache of GIMP to a value less than RAM so that GIMP does not eat up all your RAM, that way your system will be responsive even when editing high-res images (only GIMP will be slow since it has to swap data in and out from the disk)

Probably the user has had experience with other image software and many do slow computers down, especially when using hi-res images. I suspect that was probably the intended question.
